ITFor iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8, the biggest difference from its previous generation is that both the front and back cover are glass. Among other things, this glass back enables the iPhone 8’s wireless charging capabilities. The phone’s glass back is gorgeous, but also makes it vulnerable. Although Apple says the iPhone 8 has “the most durable glass ever used in a smartphone,” However, it’s glass, after all, you know, glass, which is prone not only to shattering, but also scratching and other light damage over time. Better not drop your iPhone X. If it’s damaged, you’re in for a nasty surprise: The most expensive smartphone on the market is also the most costly to repair.
However, believe it or not, breaking the fancy glass back on the iPhone X will do more damage to your wallet. Cracking the screen can be an expensive business, you need to pay $279 to fix a broken screen. As for the broken back glass, rather than counting as a screen break, it’ll fall under the “other damage” fee which is $549 (according to Apple’s repair pricing page)
And the back glass is fragile and extremely difficult to repair. The back glass is connected to the iPhone X’s housing with both glue and tiny welds, meaning there’s unlikely to be a simple way of removing and replacing it anytime soon.
