ITIf your iPhone 12 Pro Max won’t turn on, even though it hasn’t been dropped or exposed to water, you’re not alone. This issue can occur unexpectedly. In this guide, we’ll explore a real repair case involving an iPhone 12 Pro Max that suddenly blacked out during normal use. Using professional tools like a DC power supply and thermal imager, we identified and fixed a shorted capacitor near the NAND chip—a common problem in iPhones. Whether you’re a technician or a DIY repair enthusiast, this step-by-step solution will help you bring a dead iPhone 12 Pro Max back to life.
Device Overview
Model: iPhone 12 Pro Max
Announced: 2020, October 13
Defect Phenomenon
We received an iPhone 12 Pro Max that looked almost brand new—it had been used for only two months, and the original screen protector was still intact. The owner reported that the phone suddenly blacked out while using TikTok and hadn’t turned on since. There were no signs of drop or water damage. After visiting an Apple Store, the customer was informed that the phone had been previously repaired by a third party, voiding the warranty. That’s when it was brought to us.
Repair Process
Step 1: Screen Removal
We began by carefully removing the screen while preserving the waterproof sealing sticker. Any deformations in the adhesive were gently adjusted using tweezers to ensure the water resistance would remain intact after reassembly.
After removing the screen and inspecting carefully, everything appeared fine except for a small issue—a fingerprint mark on the camera flex cable. This could have been caused during a previous after-sales check or repair.
Pro Tip: Always protect the camera module and dot projector with anti-static tape before proceeding with motherboard testing.
Step 2: Power Supply Testing
We connected the motherboard to a DC power supply and attempted to boot the device. The current spiked briefly but fluctuated without stabilizing — a clear sign of a short circuit on the logic board.
Step 3: Diagnosing the Short
Given our repair experience, we suspected an issue in the NAND chip’s power supply circuit — a common failure point in multiple iPhone models. Using a multimeter, we measured the diode values under a microscope and confirmed the presence of a short.
Step 4: Thermal Imaging & Short Location
Next, we used a thermal imager and applied 1.8V to the shorted power rail. The defective component — a filter capacitor — heated up and revealed its position.
Step 5: Component Removal
We removed the motherboard and secured it in a PCB holder. After removing the surrounding foam sticker to avoid heat damage, we applied hot air to desolder the faulty capacitor. Once the solder melted, we used tweezers to safely remove it.
Note: It’s best to leave the capacitor unpopulated rather than replacing it, to avoid thermal stress on surrounding chips.
Before starting, we can remove the foam sticker around the connector. Once the operation is complete, we can reapply the foam to ensure the motherboard looks as new as possible. Additionally, the foam provides continued protection for the connectors against water and drop damage.
Step 6: Final Testing
After reassembly, we powered on the device — it booted normally. All other functions, including the touchscreen, Face ID, and cameras, worked perfectly.
Explained Technical Terms (Audience Clarity)
- DC Power Supply: A diagnostic tool that sends precise voltage/current to a device to detect power-related issues.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Tap a question to read the answer.
What is the shorted component found in this repair case?
The shorted component is a filter capacitor, which stabilizes the power supply to the NAND chip and prevents abnormal current spikes that could damage it. Although small, these capacitors are crucial for power management and are common failure points during voltage surges or circuit faults.
Why is it okay to remove the shorted capacitor without replacing it?
In cases like this, the capacitor is typically part of a filtering group, and removing it usually doesn’t affect normal phone functionality. Soldering a replacement requires applying heat to the logic board, which risks damaging nearby sensitive components. For a safer and more reliable solution, it’s better to remove the faulty capacitor and leave the position unpopulated.
What are the signs that point to a short circuit on the iPhone 12 Pro Max logic board?
When connected to a DC power supply, the current briefly spikes and then fluctuates without stabilizing, and the phone fails to boot. These symptoms usually point to a shorted component on the logic board, often in the power rail of critical chips like the NAND.
How can I locate the exact shorted component on the motherboard?
After injecting a small voltage (e.g., 1.8V) into the shorted rail, use a thermal imager to identify the faulty component. The shorted component will heat up faster than others, making it easily visible on the thermal camera.
Why is the NAND chip’s power supply a common failure point?
The NAND chip processes high data loads and undergoes constant power cycles. Its power supply rail includes several small capacitors and components that are prone to stress from irregular system behavior, faulty circuits, or inherent design flaws, which can lead to shorts over time.
Can I reuse the waterproof sealing sticker after screen removal?
Yes, the original waterproof adhesive can be preserved with careful handling. Use tweezers to gently adjust any deformation and ensure it sits properly during reassembly. This helps maintain the device’s water resistance.
Is it necessary to protect components like the dot projector during repair?
Absolutely. Use anti-static tape to cover sensitive parts like the camera module and dot projector to prevent accidental damage or static discharge during motherboard testing or soldering.
Will the iPhone function normally after removing a single capacitor?
Yes, in most cases. The removed capacitor is part of a group used for filtering power. One missing capacitor usually won’t affect phone performance, especially if other parallel capacitors are still in place and functioning.
Conclusion
A dead iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t always mean it’s beyond repair—especially if the issue is a shorted filter capacitor. By carefully diagnosing the power rail and using tools like a thermal imager, you can identify and fix such motherboard-level faults. This case underscores the importance of accurate diagnostics and highlights the need for steady hands and the right tools in every repair shop.
