ITThe iPhone 13 Pro Max’s Face ID is a cutting-edge feature, but it’s also vulnerable to damage, especially from water. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of diagnosing and repairing an iPhone 13 Pro Max Face ID failure caused by water damage. Whether you’re a seasoned technician or a DIY enthusiast, this step-by-step guide will help you restore the Face ID function on your iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Defect Phenomenon
The Face ID function on an iPhone 13 Pro Max failed, likely due to water damage affecting the Dot Projector.
Troubleshooting
1: Understanding the Issue
The Face ID module is located near the speaker mesh, making it susceptible to water infiltration. Water or moisture can easily reach the Dot Projector and cause a short circuit.
2: Removing the Face ID Module
- Carefully remove the Face ID module from the phone.
- Connect the phone to a computer via a USB cable.
- Connect the Face ID module to a Face ID programmer, which is also connected to the computer. This setup allows you to read and back up the encrypted data from the Face ID module.
Repair Process – iPhone 13 Pro Max Face ID Failure
1: Replacing the Damaged Chip
- The next step involves replacing the damaged chip on the small board of the Dot Projector.
- Begin by removing the glue under the shielding cover using a hot air gun and a blade knife.
- Carefully cut off the shielding cover with a tiny grinding machine.
- Use a hot air gun and blade knife to separate and remove the Dot Projector board from the camera frame.
2: Working with the Dot Projector Board
- The Dot Projector board is a delicate component, so handle it with care. The previously backed-up data is stored on the marked chip.
- Apply solder paste and carefully remove the chip using a hot air gun, taking care not to damage the surrounding golden wires.
- Since the replacement chip has fewer pins and no original chip is available, solder a green transfer board first.
- Reball the decrypted chip and solder it onto the transfer board.
- Align the module and apply glue to secure it back to the frame.
3: Rewriting the Data
- After soldering the new chip, the next step is to write the backed-up data into the newly soldered chip.
- Connect the Face ID module to the programmer, and ensure both the programmer and the phone are connected to the computer.
- Write the backed-up data into the Face ID module using the same setup as when reading the data.
Final Assembly and Testing
- The Face ID function should now be back to normal, and other functions should also be working correctly.
- After writing the data, reassemble the phone and test the Face ID function.
Final Touches
- To enhance the Face ID module’s performance, apply thermal grease to the Dot Projector’s shielding cover before completing the phone assembly. This step helps the Face ID module operate in a better heat dissipation environment.

Repairing an iPhone 13 Pro Max Face ID failure due to water damage can be intricate, but it’s entirely possible with the right tools and careful attention to detail.
