Whether you’re a seasoned technician or a DIY enthusiast, this guide provides detailed steps to help you perform these upgrades successfully.
Phone Details:
Model: iPhone 12 Pro
Announced: 2020, October 13
Why Upgrading iPhone 12 Pro Memory?
After two years of use, your iPhone 12 Pro’s storage may be running low, and the battery’s maximum capacity might have significantly decreased. Upgrading the memory to 512GB and replacing the battery will enhance the phone’s performance and extend its lifespan.
Memory Upgrade: Step-by-Step
1: Disassemble the Phone: Begin by carefully disassembling your iPhone 12 Pro to access the motherboard.
2: Removing the NAND Chip:
The customer wants to keep the original NAND chip as a souvenir. Therefore, we’ll use a hot air gun instead of a CNC grinding machine.
- Secure the motherboard with a PCB holder.
- Heat the surrounding area with a hot air gun to soften the black glue around the NAND chip.
Once the glue is softened, continue heating until the solder paste melts. Gently insert a blade knife to pry up the NAND chip slightly.
3: Cleaning the PCB Pads:
- Apply a small amount of solder paste flux on the PCB pads and use a soldering iron to clean off the remaining glue.
- Use solder wick to clean the pads thoroughly.
- Ensure the motherboard is clean and the pads are flat by using a PCB cleaner.
4: Installing the New 512GB NAND Chip:
- Reball the new NAND chip using medium-temperature solder paste, a stencil, and a hot air gun.
- Apply a small amount of solder paste flux on the PCB and carefully align the new NAND chip on the motherboard.
- Heat the chip until the solder melts and the chip settles into position, ensuring it’s well soldered.
5: Restoring the Phone:
- After soldering, reassemble the phone and connect it to a computer to restore the software.
- Manually activate the phone once the restoration is complete.
Check the storage capacity, which should now show 512GB available.
Congratulations, you’ve successfully upgraded your iPhone 12 Pro’s memory from 256GB to 512GB
